Supporting Parents and Families of Trans and Gender Creative Children
  • Parents and families play an important role in supporting their trans and gender diverse children, youth and family members. The Families in Transition guide, created by Central Toronto Youth Services (CTYS) is a phenomenal resource for families and caregivers looking to learn more about trans people and how to support their trans loved ones.
  • For a list of books and resources for parents of trans and gender diverse children and youth, including books to support their own learning journey, and books to share with their children, youth and families, Trans Care BC’s resource list is available.

Trans Care BC created an organizational assessment tool. Through this assessment, organizations can review their current capacity to serve and support trans communities, and identify viable next steps to improve trans inclusivity.

Understanding Transition-Related Surgeries

RHO Transition-Related Surgery Fact Sheets

Intended for use by primary care providers, these summary sheets about transition-related surgeries (TRS) provide information to facilitate discussion of TRS between primary care providers and patients.

Please note that they are not exhaustive and do not replace the informed consent process between surgeon and patient.

The Surgery Fact Sheets cover key information on the following procedures:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Chest reconstruction
  • Clitoral release
  • Hystérectomie
  • Métoidioplastie
  • Orchiectomie
  • Phalloplastie
  • Vaginoplastie

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Request for Prior Approval for Funding of Sex-Reassignment Surgery form, which must be completed by a primary care provider (nurse practitioner or physician) following Transition-Related Surgery planning visits.

Implementing inclusive intake forms is integral to creating a trans inclusive environment, while ensuring medically necessary information is collected accurately and appropriately. Wisdom2Action created a guide on trans inclusive intake forms.

Promoting 2SLGBTQI+ Health Equity in Nursing

The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario’s 2021 Best Practice Guideline: Promoting 2SLGBTQI+ Health Equity provides evidence-based recommendations and descriptions of inclusive communication, safer spaces, risk assessment and screening, group-based interventions and education, as well as outlining benefits and harms, values and preferences, and health equity considerations.

Providing Inclusive Care to Diverse Trans Communities Supporting Two Spirit Communities in Trans Healthcare

Fraser Health created a comprehensive guide to build service provider confidence and competence in serving and supporting Two Spirit peoples in healthcare contexts. The guide is titled “Providing Diversity Competent Care to Two Spirit Clients: A Handbook for Health Care Providers.

The Native Youth Sexual Health Network has created A Mental Health Peer Support Manual for Indigiqueer, Two-Spirit, LGBTQ+, and Gender Non-Conforming Indigenous youth.
